History of

Hawaiian Shave Ice

Like all great ideas, shave ice was borne out of the ingenuity of man! 

At the turn of the century (20th Century that is,) Hawaii experienced boatfuls of immigrants flowing into the country to work in the sugar cane and pineapple plantations.  A great many of these migrants were Japanese.

Working in the fields was a hot and exhausting job. To keep cool under the blazing tropical sun, the migrants would bring literally blocks of ice into the fields.  During rest breaks they would machete shavings of ice into cups.  As sugar cane juice and pineapple (juice) was readily available, they would add flavour to their ice by drenching it in the syrup.

Not only was this a thirst quenching drink, but also a healthy one  - long before “five fruits and veg” per day was a common phrase! That same healthiness is brought right-up-to-date with OUR selection fo tropical syrups
